REDE concludes TransfireSaúde's multi-stakeholder workshop cycle on ethical governance of AI in health with two simultaneous meetings in Santiago and Braga
On April 17th, the REDE group held the second and final in-person workshop of the initiative, promoted within the framework of the TransfireSaúde project, simultaneously at the Galician Agency for Health Knowledge - ACIS (Santiago de Compostela) and at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Minho (Braga, Portugal). This workshop focused on analyzing the responsibilities and ethical blind spots associated with the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare.
Following an initial session dedicated to mapping emerging ethical challenges, this second workshop facilitated a more applied reflection on how to address these challenges in practice, emphasizing governance, the distribution of responsibilities, and the need to strengthen oversight and prevention mechanisms.
As in the first workshop, the sessions brought together participants from diverse backgrounds—healthcare professionals, technology experts, and healthcare users—in heterogeneous working groups, fostering a multi-stakeholder dialogue around a central question: how to ensure the ethical, safe, transparent, and human-centered adoption of AI in healthcare.
Throughout the day, the working groups shared perspectives on the role that the various stakeholders involved in the lifecycle of these tools should play, from the initial concept to their integration into workflows, their frequent use, and their oversight. They also identified gaps and ambiguities that could hinder proper governance. The goal was to contribute to a clearer and more shared understanding of the challenges posed by incorporating AI into healthcare and the conditions necessary for its responsible adoption.
With this second workshop, TransfireSaúde concludes another phase of its training and awareness-raising program, combining online training with in-person collaborative work sessions to promote a common framework for the responsible use of artificial intelligence in healthcare in the Galicia–Northern Portugal Euroregion.
